Best Overall: Ariat Cascade Square Toe Steel Toe Work Boot
Of all the steel toe work boots I tested, none served me so well as the Ariat Cascades.
I particularly like the square toe, which gives my extra-wide feet plenty of room to move around inside the boot. The steel toe cap also doesn’t feel like it’s crushing my feet, even when I’ve got thick socks on.
The cushioning is another major selling point for me. As a big, heavy guy, I need that extra padding and support to save off foot fatigue. Thanks to the ATS® technology and Removable All Day Cushioning insole, it feels like I’m walking in my favorite pair of sneakers.
The boots meet ASTM F2413 standard for both safety toe footwear and electrical hazards, so I can wear them on any job site, even if there are live wires around. With the sturdy full-grain leather and oil- and slip-resistant Duratread™ sole, I can work fully confident my feet are as protected as they can be.
What I Like
-
The Goodyear welt construction makes them wonderfully tough. I’ve had them for 3+ years and they’re showing no sign of quitting.
-
Comfortable and very supportive, great for heavy wearers like me.
-
The sole is very grippy, and great for working in muddy and wet conditions.
-
The work boots just look great. The full grain leather adds a nice touch of style to my workwear.
What I Don’t Like
-
Really, my only complaint is that the boots aren’t waterproof. The leather will be damaged if not properly dried and oiled after heavy rainfall.
What Other Reviewers Say
The positive user reviews were what drew me to the Ariat Cascades in the first place. The boots get a lot of praise for their comfort, grippy sole, light weight, and sturdy construction. One user sums up my thoughts nicely: “these went above and beyond my expectations with all-day comfort and durability.”
A few users, however, complained the boots didn’t quite fit right, particularly above the toe area at the edge of the steel cap.
The Verdict
For a solidly built, hard-wearing, good-looking work boot, the Ariat Cascade Square Toe Steel Work Boot is my go-to. They’re tough, comfortable, wonderfully supportive, and deliver on the protection I need for a long day on any job site or hazardous workplace.
Most Durable: Nicks BuilderPro Cutters Choice
I’m a big fan of Nicks boots because of their handmade quality and the various customization options they offer. So when I saw they had these boots specifically for builders, carpenters, and framers, I knew I had to give them a try.
Let me tell you: they did not disappoint.
The BuilderPro Cutters Choice are made with a roughout leather that is surprisingly tough, and capable of withstanding scratches, scuffs, nicks, and punctures. The integrated steel toe is ASTM-standard and fits nicely inside the boot, not pushing too much on my toes even when my feet swell up.
The V100 lug outsole does a great job of keeping my feet solidly on the ground, even if I’m working out in the rain or slogging through mud. And thanks to the long shaft (10”), I can use them for farming and ranching as well as construction work.
What I Like
-
They’re just an all-around handsome pair of boots, with the rugged-looking roughout leather and the stacked leather heel.
-
The integrated steel toe is sized just right so I don’t feel it at all while I’m working.
-
You can customize your choice of leather options, last shape, as well as the width.
-
The boots can be fully rebuilt and resoled whenever they ultimately break down (though I’ve been using mine for 2+ years and they’re still in great shape).
-
The V100 lug outsole is nicely grippy and offers great traction.
What I Don’t Like
-
Nicks makes all their boots by hand, so the wait time can be anywhere between 6-12 months.
What Other Reviewers Say
There aren’t a lot of reviews about the Nicks BuilderPro Cutters Choice available, so it’s hard to find real-life feedback from users. One of the reviews I found mentioned that the custom-ordered boots arrived in a size too tight for the wearer. However, once customer service helped him to get the boots rebuilt in the right size, they’ve become his favorite pair of boots, one he wears 10+ hours a day. He praised them as “an investment that paid off”.
The Verdict
The Nicks BuilderPro Cutters Choice are a great choice if you’re looking for a tough, ultra-long-lasting pair of work boots. They’re designed to be amazingly comfortable (when sized correctly) and deliver the protection your feet need on the job. And thanks to their handmade quality and the top-notch materials used, you can trust they’ll last for years to come—and can be resoled and rebuilt when they start wearing out.
Best Waterproof: Georgia Boot Waterproof Chelsea Work Boot
Rainfall (particularly during the colder months here in British Columbia) can make for some pretty miserable working conditions unless you’ve got the right pair of boots. After testing the Georgia Boot Waterproof Chelsea Work Boot, I can say with confidence these are the right pair.
The shoes are built with the “Georgia Waterproof System,” an unspecified (trust me, I searched!) construction that the bootmaker claims to be fully waterproof. After putting them to the test in 2+ months of Vancouver rain, I’ll say they live up to the claim very nicely.
In addition to being waterproof, the boots are comfortable, easy to pull on and off (thanks to the integrated pull tabs), sturdy, and protective. They’re heat, chemical, abrasion, and slip-resisting, feature great cushioning in the midsole, and offer solid arch support.
What I Like
-
Just an all-around well-built pair of low-cut work boots, great for working in the summer heat and rainy conditions.
-
Fiberglass shank integrated into the sole make them very stable even on uneven surfaces.
-
High-performance mesh lining kept my feet nicely cool all summer long.
-
Full-grain leather upper is very resilient and puncture-resistant.
-
Meets ASTM F2413 standard for both safety toe and electrical hazard protection.
What I Don’t Like
-
The 5” height is just a little shorter than I typically prefer for work boots. They offer less ankle support and protection than I like.
What Other Reviewers Say
Reading over the reviews for the Georgia Boot Waterproof Chelsea Work Boot, it’s clear to see users can’t get enough of these bad boys. Wearers rave about their easy-on, easy-off fit, their out-of-the-box comfort, the ultra-short break-in time, and their durability. One user even went so far as to call them “the most comfortable work shoes I have ever worn”.
The Verdict
If you’re working in rain, sleet, snow, or mud, slide on the Georgia Boot Waterproof Chelsea Work Boots and your feet will thank you. Their waterproof design shrugs off damp and moisture like a boss so you never have to worry about soggy shoes or cold feet. Add to that an incredibly tough, comfortable, and supportive design, and you’ve got yourself a winner.
Why (and When) Should You Wear Steel Toe Work Boots?
Steel toe work boots are boots that feature a steel cap incorporated into the forefoot, intended to protect the toe.
They are useful—and OSHA-required—for a wide range of professions, including:
- Mechanics
- Welders
- Construction workers
- Forklift technicians
- Truck drivers
- Lift operators
Really, steel toe boots protect your feet from rolling objects (say, a rolling truck wheel), falling objects (cinder blocks or steel beams), cuts and punctures (nails, rebar, screws, etc.), and heavy packages and loads.
If you’re in any kind of profession where you might encounter such hazards on the job, it’s likely you are required to wear steel toe work boots.
4 Key Considerations Before Buying
Keep Safety in Mind
Pick boots that suit not only the job (mechanic, welder, construction worker, etc.), but also your environment. The steel toe cap is just one consideration—also take into account features like slip resistance, chemical resistance, puncture resistance, and insulation, depending on your environment.
It’s worth studying the various safety shoe classifications so you understand just what level of protection each type of footwear offers.
Know Your Toe Caps
When you see a pair of “safety toe” boots, it means that the boots feature a safety toe featuring some material—but it might not necessarily be steel.
Safety toes are made out of a wide range of materials:
- Steel
- Composite (a blend of carbon, fiberglass, and/or Kevlar)
- Alloy (usually some lighter metals, like titanium or aluminum)
It’s a subject of great debate as to which is better.
But the point I wanted to make here is about the naming convention. A pair of “safety toe” boots may use steel, but it may also use some other material. Basically, if you want a steel toe, look for “steel toe boots” and not “safety toe boots.”
Go for Style and Durability
Style is always important, but on the job, durability is probably the most essential factor to consider. After all, the tougher the boot, the better it’ll be at protecting you from falling, rolling, or piercing objects.
Work boots made with full-grain leather and sturdy rubber tend to be the toughest and most resilient. However, it’s always good if your work boots feature at least some mesh or breathable fabric (typically synthetic) to keep your feet from overheating on the job.
Consider Comfort
The comfort of a pair of work boots is typically determined by a number of factors:
- Support for your ankles keeps you from injury if you trip or fall on the job.
- Cushioning for your feet will reduce foot fatigue and provide arch support.
- Built-in insoles will add extra padding and support. (Though, you can always get yourself a pair of insoles for work boots if the boots you love don’t have built-in insoles.)
- A grippy rubber outsole will offer solid traction on wet, slippery ground.
- A roomy toe box will give your toes room to move around in, preventing constriction of your feet (especially when they swell after a long day on the go).
- A heavier boot will offer more protection but may be too heavy to be comfortable on jobs where you’re walking or on your feet all day. Lighter boots are more mobile but offer less protection.
- Breathability keeps your feet cool and dry, especially on those hot summer days.
Stay Safe in Style
Steel toe boots give your feet the protection that’s needed to keep you safe from hazards, accidents, and injuries. Plus, thanks to their amazing durability, cushioning, and support, they’ll stave off foot fatigue and make sure you’re comfortable for those long work days on your feet.
Thanks to my research, I’ve concluded the Ariat Cascade Square Toe Steel Toe Work Boot was the best boot overall. It just delivered on quality, comfort, protection, versatility, and reliability—and at a price tag I would gladly pay.
For a pair of boots I can trust to last for years, the Nicks BuilderPro Cutters Choice has that handmade durability that just can’t be beat. And if I’m going to head out into wet, rainy, or slushy weather, the Georgia Boot Waterproof Chelsea Work Boot gives me the versatile weather resistance I need to stay comfortable and dry all day long.
Ariat’s WorkHog is my go-to for cowboy work, CAT’s Woodward Steel Toe Shoes keep me moving light and easy in work shoes, and Wolverine’s Floorhand Steel Toe Work Boot is a good pair of backup boots that’s easy on my wallet.
